Rays of Sunshine - Meet Heather

Hey Friends and Welcome to our Friday series, Rays of Sunshine. This series is meant to feature different women from different walks of life; giving us a small glimpse into their lives with the hope of leaving you encouraged.

Meet Heather:
Hello dear circles of sunshine!  I’m Heather.  I am so excited to be guest posting today—I’ve never actually guest posted before.

I am a mother, wife, homemaker, Bible Study leader, newblogger, and creator of The Not So Blank Canvas.  Today I get to share with you what my typical day looks like.  Funny thing though, no day is typical for me.  That’s the beauty of running your own business. I began painting canvas signs a little over two years ago.  It was only after several nudges from a friend that I opened my etsy shop “just to see.” I really didn’t expect much to come of it, but now it is my part time/full time job.  Apart from Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, when I’m at Bible Study, and the (not so) occasional lunch out, you’ll find me designing and painting canvases.  Here are a few photos of my workspace.

Five years ago, if someone had told me that I’d be painting signs as my job, I would have laughed out loud.  It’s a bit obscure, right?  But God has been so neat in His creative provision and building of my business.  And trust me, I’m not the person who naturally gives Him credit for everything (I steal it from Him just like the next girl, thank you very much) but this little gig has obviously been from His hand.  There have been times where I wanted to do something else, but I think it’s my husband, Michael’s sweet encouragement that’s kept me here. This probably won’t be the job I retire from but it fits with our family right now.  So anyway, enough about that, I also have three boys ages 11, 9, and 6.

They are such blessings and so so fun, but I must say that they have been a shock learning experience for this girl who never played outside but instead played with dolls and listened to records. They are rowdy and smelly and funny and curious. You can read a little more about them here.  So, as you’ll see in my (laugh) schedule, they are my other job.  My primary job, right?

Oh, and one more thing—on this random day, I was up before 6:00 but that doesn’t always happen.  Sometimes it’s 5, sometimes 7.  I don’t want you to mistakenly think I have a handle on the discipline thing!

5:50 wake up, let the dog out, attempt to read my Bible
6:20 Matt, my 6 year old wakes up--that boy has radar ears because he’s always up a few minutes after me, no matter when it is!

6:25 shower, and kinda getting ready; Matt is naked (where are his clothes?) playing with his legos

7:00 I wake everyone else up: breakfast, arguments about clothes, Bible reading, fussy attitudes, sweet hugs, etc., etc.  I bet some of this is familiar to you

8:00 Michael takes everyone to school
8:00—8:30 laundry and dishes

8:30 make my ‘to do’ list for the day
8:40—11:30 review orders; email and answer conversations on etsy; paint some canvases

change out the laundry; finish up my ColorInfusion blog post;  work on my new color chart (way overdue!)

11:30 reheat pizza for lunch

11:40- 2:00 paint some more; clean up; think about dinner but forget to thaw anything out (this happens a lotJ)

2:00 run to TJ Max—I never shop during the day, but on this day I had the “oh drat, my child has no long sleeve shirts and it’s gonna be cold today” moment that occurs every fall.  I found 8 long sleeve shirts. Score.

3:00 pick boys up from school

3:30 snack for them (and me), homework, playing outside, and I’m sure there was some tv or wii mixed in there somewhere

4:00 begin dinner, which is chicken fried rice without the chicken because I forgot to thaw the chicken

5:00 dinner

5:15 take Andrew, my 11 year old, to football practice; clean up from dinner; play outside with the other two

6:45 pick up from football; start baths; watch an episode of The Wonder Years

8:30 boys to bed

8:45 Michael and I do a quick “blitz” (blitz: our word for picking up the house, in an effort to make it sound more exciting)

9:00 tv on the couch

10:15 to bed

Thanks for letting me share,
Heather
